Washington, DC (September 12, 2007) – Today, Congressman Rubén Hinojosa (TX-15) announced that he has helped secure a $1,597,600 grant for the Goliad County Water Supply Corporation. The grant was awarded through the USDA Rural Development’s Water and Waste Disposal Loan and Grant Programs.  The funding will be used to provide a new water supply system for Goliad’s La Bahia community with 106 connections.  Many residents of this area have private wells that produce poor quality water.          

“La Bahia has long been in need of a clean, reliable water supply and I am proud to announce that this critical grant will ensure this finally happens.” said Hinojosa. “This funding will better secure the health and well-being of La Bahia’s residents and the future prosperity of the community.”

“This has been a major undertaking due to the historical significance of La Bahia, and the considerable diligence that it has taken to complete this project,” said Goliad County Judge Harold F. Gleinser. “The early history of Goliad is read by every student in Texas, therefore, it was our goal to preserve its environment and history. The Goliad Water Supply has succeeded to bring much needed water to the residents of La Bahia.  I appreciate the tenacity and dedication Congressman Hinojosa has made to obtain this grant.” 

The USDA Rural Development Water and Waste Disposal Program is designed to bring fresh, clean drinking water and sanitary, environmentally sound sewage facilities to rural America’s 53 million residents.  Loans and grants are available to rural communities with fewer than 10,000 residents.  Public bodies, corporations operating on a non-profit basis, and Indian tribes, that are unable to obtain credit from other sources at reasonable rates and terms, are eligible for assistance.
